''Mitra'' is a large genus of medium to large predatory sea snails, marine gastropod mollusks in the family Mitridae, the miter shells or miter snails. 〔 Rosenberg, G.; Gofas, S. (2014). Mitra Lamarck, 1798. Accessed through: World Register of Marine Species at http://www.marinespecies.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=138180 on 2014-11-09 〕 This genus is named after the ecclesiastical headgear, the miter, because of the shells' general shape. These sea snails create shells that are considered attractive by shell collectors; the shells are solid, high-spired and are often colorful. ==Species== According to the World Register of Marine Species, the following species with accepted names are included within the genus ''Mitra'':〔(WoRMS : Mitra )〕 * ''Mitra acupicta'' Reeve, 1844 : synonym of ''Vexillum (Costellaria) acupictum'' (Reeve, 1845) * ''Mitra aikeni'' Lussi, 2009 * ''Mitra alborufa'' Bozzetti, 2009 * ''Mitra aliciae'' Poppe, Tagaro & Salisbury, 2009 * ''Mitra amabilis'' Reeve, 1845 : synonym of ''Vexillum (Pusia) amabile'' (Reeve, 1845) * ''Mitra ambigua'' Swainson, 1829 * ''Mitra ancillides'' Broderip, 1836 * ''Mitra antillensis'' Dall, 1889 * ''Mitra arnoldeyasi'' Poppe, Tagaro & Salisbury, 2009 * ''Mitra aureolata'' Swainson, 1844 : synonym of ''Vexillum (Pusia) aureolatum'' (Reeve, 1844) * ''Mitra aurora'' floridula Jay, 1874 * ''Mitra barbadensis'' (Gmelin, 1791) - Barbados miter * ''Mitra bovei'' Kiener, 1838 * ''Mitra brunnea'' Pease : synonym of ''Mitra (Strigatella) fastigium'' Reeve, 1845 * ''Mitra caliginosa'', Reeve, 1844 * ''Mitra carbonaria'' Swainson, 1798 * ''Mitra cardinalis'' (Gmelin, 1791) * ''Mitra chalybeia'' Reeve, 1844 * ''Mitra chinensis'' Griffith & Pidgeon, 1834 * ''Mitra christinae'' Poppe, 2008 * ''Mitra circula'' Kiener, 1838 : synonym of ''Neocancilla circula'' (Kiener, 1838) * ''Mitra coffea'' Schubert & Wagner, 1829 * ''Mitra cookii'' Sowerby, 1874 * ''Mitra cornea'' (Lamarck, 1811) * ''Mitra cornicula'' (Linnaeus, 1758) : synonym of'' Vexillum (Pusia) ebenus'' (Lamarck, 1811) * ''Mitra cuyosae'' Poppe, 2008 * ''Mitra cylindrica'' Rve. : synonym of ''Mitra variabilis'' Reeve, 1844 * ''Mitra daedala'' Rve. : synonym of ''Vexillum (Costellaria) daedalum'' (Reeve, 1845) * ''Mitra damasomonteiroi'' Cossignani & Cossignani, 2007 * ''Mitra deprofundis'' Turner, 2001 * ''Mitra deshayesi'' Reeve, 1844 : synonym of ''Vexillum (Costellaria) deshayesi'' (Reeve, 1845) * ''Mitra digitalis'' Dillwyn : synonym of ''Mitra (Mitra) imperialis'' Röding, 1798 * ''Mitra dondani'' Cernohorsky, 1985 * ''Mitra edentula'' Swainson, 1823 * ''Mitra edgari'' Poppe, Tagaro & Salisbury, 2009 * ''Mitra episcopalis'' Linnaeus, 1758 : synonym of ''Mitra (Mitra) mitra'' (Linnaeus, 1758) * ''Mitra eremitarum'' Röding, 1798 * ''Mitra espinosai'' Sarasúa, 1978 * ''Mitra exasperata'' Chemnitz, 1790 : synonym of ''Vexillum (Costellaria) exasperatum'' (Gmelin, 1791) * ''Mitra fasciolaris'' Deshayes in Laborde & Linant, 1834 * ''Mitra filaris'' : synonym of ''Cancilla (Domiporta) filaris'' (Linnaeus, 1771) * ''Mitra fissurata'' : synonym of ''Scabricola (Swainsonia) fissurata'' (Lamarck, 1811) * ''Mitra flammigera'' Reeve * ''Mitra fulgurita'' Reeve, 1844 * ''Mitra fultoni'' E.
